It’s okay to fall…

It’s not okay to stay down.

October was a bit of a rough one for me personally. I fell off and got back on track multiple and I ended the month feeling defeated and worn. Can you relate?? I know we have all had moments like this, but I’m determined to not let it keep me down.

It’s inevitable we’re going to fall. We’re human. Things come up. We get distracted and lose our focus. And then we realize we’ve lost it. What comes next in your story? Do you continue on that lost, distracted, messy path or do you work hard to get back on the path? I hope your answer is the latter although for many of us it may be the first.

So what happens now? We’ve reached that point where we have that decision to make. How do we get back to heading towards our goals??

#1 – I want you to know it’s okay. That seems kinda weird to say coming from a health and fitness coach, right? You’d expect me to throw motivating words at you and have you go sweat hardcore in a workout right this second. But for anyone in this place, that’s probably the most discouraging thing. You are human which means you will fail at times. You will stumble. Accept it.

#2 – Give yourself grace. This leads directly from number one. I don’t know how many times I can say it before people start believing it, but you aren’t expected to be perfect. You don’t need to be 100% to see the results and changes you’re striving for. Now, please don’t confuse this with not trying. You do need to give your best effort, but if you’re hitting the mark at least 80% of the time, consider that a win. If you feel like you’ve fallen off track because you missed one workout or slipped with one meal, stop. Grace. Breathe. Move forward.

#3 – Reflect. What was it that caused you to stumble? Can you remember around the time that you started falling off? Was it a birthday, anniversary, vacation, life event, etc.? If you can reflect and try to pinpoint where this began it makes it easier to overcome, now and in the future. You may not be able to identify a past event or moment where this struggle began. If you’re in that boat, gather any pieces that you can from recent past, but also pay close attention to the now. When you feel like going for that brownie, what else is going on? When you want to skip that workout, is there a deeper reason? A lot of the time it’s deeper than we think.

#4 – Write down your goals. Make a list of all the goals you want to achieve in these next 30 days. Big and small, brain dump everything. Are there any themes? Things that go together? Are smaller goals action items or checkpoints for bigger goals? Narrow these down to your top 3. Take this a step further and set weekly checkpoints and daily actions. By breaking your goals down, you’re taking your eyes off the big, overwhelming goal and focusing on the here and now. This is motivating and you’ll feel a lot more in control! I know when I have a big goal for say 30 days out, I’ll likely wait until it gets a little closer. It doesn’t feel like my actions today affect my results 30 days from now. But they do! Break it down and go after those bite size wins!

#5 – Set yourself up for success. Put accountability into action: your own personal accountability and accountability with others.

  • Personal accountability – your weekly checkpoints and daily actions. To track you might use a chart, a planner, a notebook, an app, whatever works for you! The important thing is that you track it! What you measure will improve. Be honest with yourself
  • Community accountability – we need those people around us that will support, encourage, and give us a kick in the ass when we need it. Communicate your goals with people you trust to help hold you to them. This be a spouse, parent, sibling, friend. Even better if they’re on a similar journey! There is a power when we fight for it together. I lead an accountability group on Facebook and it’s made a world of difference in my own journey. I’ve given up on myself before, but I’m surrounded {virtually} but a group of people that hold me accountable. I can be honest and they will rally around me – we do it for each other.

Your goals matter. YOU MATTER!!! You are important and you have something amazing to share with our world. We need you. It’s very hard to make an impact and show up in the world the way we really want {confident, happy, energetic, passionate} when we aren’t taking care of ourselves. Set your goals. Make the healthiest choices that you can. Treat yourself with respect and love, just like you would treat your best friend. It’s never too late to make a fresh start. Don’t wait until January 1st to make a resolution. Why waste the time we have right now?? Go after it!

❤ Flourishingly,
