#Blessed – how to have joy

The secret is simple: gratitude.

This has become more talked about, especially this time of year. Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces. Why? Because it has the power to cut through jealousy, hurt, frustrations, doubt, worry, fear. Those and gratitude cannot exist in the same heart simultaneously.

For most people, this is not your nature. You have to learn how to do it. It has to become a habit and it takes conscious effort. Why is it hard? I think for us as people, we’ve been taught to pay attention to the negative. It’s interesting and for our ancestors, it’s what kept them alive. Focus on the bad and scary. We don’t live in that type of world, but our brains still hang on to that thought process.

We have to train our brains to work in a new way – one focused on positives and blessings. When we’re talking about gratitude, this doesn’t need to be grand things. Yes, big things will happen that you will certainly be grateful for, but I think more important are those smaller, everyday things: running water, AC/heat, clothes to wear, food in the fridge, etc. Our basic needs being met in also a cause for gratitude and everything in between.

During my quiet time I’m prompted to each day write down something I’m grateful for. Some days that’s hard. I live a blessed life, but sometimes I sit there thinking “this isn’t big enough” “this isn’t new” “nothing good is happening….” No, no, and no. Big or small- doesn’t matter. Don’t overlook the everyday, ‘old’ things. There is always something good. Plain and simple.

Start today. Grab a pen and paper, create a new note in your phone, open an email – wherever you want to document – but beginning right now write down one thing you’re grateful for. Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day… This may feel weird or uncomfortable, but I promise it’ll be worth it.

Take 2 minutes each day to add to your list. That will likely be the most encouraging 2 minutes of your day! How long can you make your list!? Your eyes will be opened to the overflowing blessings and the list will be never ending. Tackle the negatives with these fresh eyes!

I challenge you to develop an attitude of gratitude and see how your world changes. Seek out the light!
